Reward charts

This week i am really interested in seeing your reward charts.

This is an area we are venturing into and Sophie adores getting stickers for good behavior.  So i have made her a few simple topics  like being a helpful girl, learning her words and numbers, eating dinner and good swimming, and laminated these on a sheet of paper so we can place her stickers on them when she earns one.  She then cashes these stickers in for treats mostly internet movies 20 stickers and going to the cinema with popcorn and drinks 40 stickers as she is a bit of a movie buff.

Now i know there is a bit of divide out there with mummies and reward charts some see it as positive reinforcement and motivational for the children and others find that children should just behave well and be helpful with out being bribed with stickers.

For us the sticker system works really well, we do not demand Sophie does chorus but ask her and if she does well she is rewarded, she is naturally a helpful child.  We also found it really useful in keeping her motivation going for things she has an interest in like swimming.  After all in the real world what happens at work ? if you perform to all your goals at work your earn a bonus getting rewards for good behavior is the way of life and i bet going home with that extra money in your pocket makes you feel happy.  It is the same for Sophie she gets a sense of achievement  and is happy to have reached a goal and receive her reward. We also love giving her the thinking dilemma of when she has reached 20 should she continue to save them till 40 for a better reward or spend them right away.  Our thinking is this will help in the future with developing her thinking about saving rather than to be frivolous which could help teach about the value of money etc.
For those that charts and stickers work well there is a whole raft of systems out there.  You can download charts, buy them and make them so they are tailored to your child's motivation.  I have seen some mummies charts that are very comprehensive the size of A1 cards with a grid system and 30 different topics to achieve and some that are very simple like ours.

So my question is
So If you have an opinion on reward charts good or bad share it below, what does your reward chart look like? how do you reward your little person? What sort of things do you use as rewards and how much do you set these for? Share it here at the The good life lounge link up party.

  1. Hi Helen, we've used reward charts and found them really helpful to concentrate on a particular area of behaviour, to break a bad habit. Thought you might like to check out my post:

  3. We had reward charts for various things... The "chart" I found the most helpful though were our marble jars... The children had a jar each (not huge!) and were given marbles for whatever it was we were trying to improve. They got their reward when the jars were full! :D

  4. A full jar (and we are not talking massive quality street jars here) meant a special day out of their choice, whether that was swimming, cinema, or something a bit further afield! Worked really well! :)
