Cubby Kit Outer space

Today was a raining day and Sophie was rather bored but that was to change as there was a knock at the door and a parcel was delivered named to the littlest member of the family, Sophie.  She couldn't believe her eyes as this enormous package was just for her.

The package was from the very creative craft people from Cubby kit.  Cubby kits are a selection of well thought out crafting activities designed around one theme, ours was all about Outer Space.

This is great as a busy mum my mind is always thinking of activities that will keep my little monster occupied and this can take a bit of planing and visits to multiple shops.

Sophie's box contained every thing she need to make a 3D Rocket picture, Mushy Martians and a constellation wall chart, plus extra goodies just to get creative with. By my reconing that's one activity a week  for a whole month how very smart.

3D Rocket picture
Sophie couldn't wait and started colouring in her rocket picture with the colouring pencils, She wanted to glue some glitter and of course Cubby the bear at the window so he could see where he was flying to.  Mummy cut the rocket out with the scissors that were provided. I was so happy that everything we could possible need was in the box it meant that we could just get down and have some good creative fun.

Sophie glued the wings of her rocket and mummy helped her position the rocket in place to make it pop out 3D style.  We cut and curled the ribbon and attached it to the bottom of the rocket to be the flames and practiced our ZOOM ZOOM noises for the sound of the rocket.

Sophie loved splating glue around on the black poster and sprinkling the silver glitter to make constellations and a moon.  We shook off the excess glitter and hey presto a fantastic 3D Rocket picture.  Lots of fun and easy for Sophie to do.

Mushy Martians
Next we got the bag and tubs with all the bits and bobs for making mushy martians. Each task comes with a how to guide and these are really clear and simple to follow as well as how to pictures to follow as well, the cards also hold some great facts, ours were all about space like the earth is the same weight as 8 of our moons all very interesting stuff.

We followed our nice and easy instructions and mixed up our mushy martians in a saucepan on a gentle heat 

One thing i would say is that the green food colouring provided wasn't very green as you can see by the white blob i sat on top of my green version, i added some food colouring of my own and you can see the difference in colours between the two, this was no biggy as i have this kind of stuff around in the kitchen.

The play dough was so soft and squishy and easy to mould and worked first time which was satisfying and installed a lot of confidence that any future kits sent would really work and there would be nothing to worry about.

The last activity in the box was to make a constellation wall chart and this was a great dot to dot or rather star to star activity joining the stars on the postcards provided with a lovely silver gel pen to make up a constellation, one was done for us which gave us a great idea of what we should do, mummy did two with Sophie and we counted and searched out the stars as we went.  Sophie got to do the last one by herself and she invented her very own star constellation.

 These were stuck onto the black poster card and along with some planets, satellites and comets and Sophie used the gold glitter pen to add more sparkle to her night sky picture.

Looking at the big box all the crafting goodies came in we decided to make a driving panel so Sophie could pretend to drive her very own rocket. I taped up the box to create a angle but left one side panel free

 I stuck a piece of paper that was left over to the top and fetched a paper plate i had spare and made a hole in the plate and box and pushed split pin through the centre of the plate and into the box the put my hand into the unstuck part of box to spread out the split pin before sealing the box. I rummaged through the recycling and got some different coloured lids and stuck these to the control panel as buttons to BEEP.  Sophie was now ready to launch her own rocket.

Papier Mache planet

We looked at all the paper bags that come with all the goodies and saw that we hadn't used our tissue paper or balloon and this was just perfect for making a papier mache planet. We had fun ripping up the bags and tissue paper and this was great messy play as we really got stuck in gluing the ripped up brown paper to the blown up balloon, we even used the string that tied up the black paper to make a hanger for the planet.

 We then used up all the pretty blue tissue paper on top of the brown paper to make the seas and Sophie added a touch of sparkle to the seas with the rest of the glitter before we cut out green paper to make some islands.  This took a long time to dry as we used lots of glue so we need to let this dry over night.
